Holidays R Us

Like many people at this time of year I am going on holiday soon.I am going on a cruise with my brother Michael, his family and another family too. I am going on a ship called Oceana, oceanaowned and operated by P&O.

Very unusual for me, I am taking a whole two weeks off, whoopee.

Normally I just grab a couple of days here and there, but my partner, Lisa just booked it up and we’re off. I almost had no say.

But I am looking forward to it immensely. In case you don’t know I have had quite a varied life, prior to owning an Indian restaurant. I actually did work on a cruise ship for 4 years as an entertainments officer from 1991-95. I worked for P&O on their line SS Canberra.

What a life, a terrific life. So for the first time in twelve years, I am going back on a cruise, obviously not to work but to see the other side, “waiter more champagne please”.

Things no doubt will have changed, but although I was working, I wasn’t really “working”. I had one of those socializing jobs; you know playing tennis with passengers, football, calling bingo numbers…. “2 fat ladies 88”……, endless parties, well those were just a few of the things I got up to and paid for. If you have never tried cruising, let me assure you it is not just full of “Old Dears”. Companies like P&O have really pushed their marketing onto a younger set and it has worked. In fact my brother went on his first cruise last year with his family and his wife Alison booked this year and has booked two other cruises as well and they are both in their 40s. Give it a try, I know you’ll love it!I’ll let you know how I get on. I’m not going for a week or so and may even post another blog or two yet.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

No Smoking Ban has it made any difference?

When the no smoking ban came into force on the 1st July, it didn’t really bother us.

No, WE are adhering to the law of the land. It’s just that at Popadoms we introduced a ban nearly three years ago and as I have mentioned many times on my site, it did not make any difference to sales at all.

Our customers have been very considerate to our other diners for years, by popping outside for their drag of the weed.

For the winter, I am considering putting one of those heat lamps outside under the canopy to keep the smokers warm. What do you think; let me have your comments below.

I never smoked, although when I was younger a lot of my friends did, so I guess I was lucky not to get addicted. I never went out with a girl that smoked and always made sure that if I was in the disco, (HEY they call them nightclubs now) and wanted to “pull a bird”, (did we really talk like that) I’d make sure by observing her for a while to see if she smoked. No matter how good looking she was, I just wasn’t that interested.

Now!! With the smoking ban, its all a bit more precarious. Now I’d be chatting a girl all night with all sorts of mischievous thoughts about what we might get up to later, buying her drinks and then find out at 2 O’clock, (they probably are open later than that these days) as we step outside, she reaches into her bag, lights up and starts dragging on her Marlboro Reds…Yes it makes life just a little bit more tricky…..

Fortunately I don’t frequent the local clubs that often, but I have been BANNED from Envy nightclub in Camberley a couple of years ago, not bad for a fifty year old. No it wasn’t through fighting or being drunk, those days are way behind me now, well the fighting anyway!! No it was for arguing with the door staff, can you believe it ME arguing. No…. I haven’t missed the place.

Got any thought on smoking, should I put up a heater outside, or serve the smokers Vindaloo curries only to keep them warm. Or any thoughts on arguing with door staff.

Leave your comments for others to see. Just click on comments below.

Take care.

Sean
